Scallops
Scallops are a type of seafood that are enjoyed by many
people, even those who are usually not particularly fond of other types
of fish. This is true because they feature a soft, fleshy texture and
a delicately mild and sweet flavor.
The season for fresh sea scallops as well as bay scallops runs from
fall until early spring. The season for fresh calico scallops is from
mid-winter to mid-spring. Frozen scallops are available all year long.
The edible portion of scallops is the white muscle that opens and closes
the two shells. This portion of the scallop is known as the “nut.”
Some cultures have been known to eat the scallops’ reproductive
glands, although this does not typically occur in North America.
In addition to scallops being a seafood item that is delicious and enjoyed
by many people, there are also several health benefits associated with
eating these items. Scallops contain a variety of nutrients that can
help promote a person’s cardiovascular health. It has also been
found to help provide protection against colon cancer.
