Salmon
Salmon includes Omega-3 essential fatty acids that your
heart needs in order to function properly.
Because the human body is unable to produce Omega-3s, people must be
able to provide these items for themselves through their diet. One popular
choice that supplies Omega-3s is salmon.
The American Heart Association recommends that people eat fish that
are high in Omega-3s at least twice a week. The fish that are high in
Omega-3s include salmon, lake trout, herring, sardines, mackerel and
albacore tuna.
Salmon and these other types of seafood help protect people from heart
disease by:
• Making the blood less likely to form clots.
• Preventing any kind of abnormalities in the way the heart beats.
• Lowering high levels of triglycerides. These are a type of fat
that can increase heart attacks when its levels are too high.
For optimal health, salmon and other foods high in Omega-3s should
be prepared by baking, broiling, grilling, poaching, steaming and sautéing
in little or no fat.
